The story

Why I'm building this

Search for almost anything in a Scottish town and you'll get the same results: chains, booking platforms, and paid ads. The family-run place three doors down — often better, usually cheaper, run by someone who's lived there thirty years — sits on page four, because nobody there has the time or budget to fight for a ranking.

Meanwhile, visitors walk past it. Not out of preference, but because it's genuinely invisible online. Ask anyone what the best part of their trip was and it's almost never the thing in the guidebook — it's the place a local sent them to.

ScottishLocal exists to close that gap in both directions. For visitors, it's a free guide to the hidden gems of Scotland's towns and villages, organised region by region. For businesses, it's a properly built, search-optimised page — free — for people who've never had the budget to market themselves.

The site is new, so my own search presence is being built at the same time as everyone else's. Which is exactly why the basic listing is free and always will be.

How it works

Three simple parts

Visitors browse free

Pick a region, see its towns, landmarks and independent businesses. No account, no booking fees, no commission — ever.

Businesses get a real page

Every listing is built to proper technical SEO standards — structured data, real HTML, local search terms — so it can actually be found.

Optional upgrades fund it

A small number of businesses pay for their own page and hands-on help. That's what keeps the guide free for everyone else.

Who writes this

Alasdair Bird, Editor

I'm a Scot living in a town full of small businesses that don't realise how straightforward it is to get themselves online.

ScottishLocal is written and maintained by me alone. I'm trying to help smaller businesses grow by getting them in front of the searches people are already making.

Businesses with a full page show when their details were last checked. If anything on this site is out of date, say so — corrections are dealt with within two working days, free, whatever tier the listing is on.

My promises

What I won't do

  • I won't sell rankings. Paying gets you more space and my time, never a fake review score or a rigged sort order.
  • I won't promise what I can't control. Nobody can guarantee a Google position, and I won't pretend otherwise to close a sale.
  • I won't take a cut. No commission, no booking fees. Customers contact businesses directly.
  • I won't list chains. Independent, family-run and community businesses only. That's the whole point.
